MILWAUKEE (September 3, 2014) – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s basketball team will play six home nonconference games, including a showdown with 2014 NCAA Final Four participant Wisconsin, according to the non-league slate announced today by Panthers head coach Rob Jeter. UWM, which last season made its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and won over 20 games for seventh time in the last 12 years, will also play four power conference schools during the nonconference portion of the 2014-15 schedule.
“We have assembled a very difficult nonconference schedule that we feel will prepare us for the rigors of Horizon League play,” Jeter said. “Our team will be challenged to the fullest extent with games against four teams from power conferences, including our home game against Wisconsin on December 10. Games against Auburn, Arkansas and Oklahoma State should also be exciting for our fans and give our team an opportunity to compete against top-quality teams.”
The first few weeks of the season will prove to be challenging for the Panthers, who will play seven games in 16 days to open the 2014-15 campaign. A familiar face will be on the other bench when Milwaukee opens the season at Auburn on November 14 in a game that will be televised live on ESPNU. Bruce Pearl, who guided the Panthers to three straight seasons of 20-plus wins from 2002-05, and to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths, is in his first season as the head coach at Auburn.
Milwaukee will host former Panther guard Dan Weisse’s Minnesota-Crookston squad on November 17 in the first regular-season game played at UWM Panther Arena before welcoming IUPUI to town on November 19.
Two nights later, the Panthers pay a visit to Stillwater, Oklahoma for their first-ever meeting with Oklahoma State. That game, along with the season opener at Auburn, is part of the MGM Grand Main Event. From there, Milwaukee will travel to Las Vegas, where it will play games on November 24 and 26 against opponents that are to be determined.
Following a very brief respite for Thanksgiving, UWM returns to Panther Arena where it will play three of its next four games, beginning with a November 29 meeting with Concordia-St. Paul. A home game versus UMKC (Dec. 3) precedes a short trip to Chicago where the Panthers will take on DePaul (Dec. 7) before returning to Panther Arena for the December 10 showdown with Wisconsin, which will be televised live on ESPN2.
Milwaukee returns to campus on December 14 when it plays host to Montana at Klotsche Center and the team closes out the nonconference portion of its schedule with three consecutive road jaunts – to SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 20), Arkansas (Dec. 22) and South Dakota (Dec. 28). The game at Arkansas will also be the Panthers’ first-ever meeting with the Razorbacks and will be televised on ESPNU, marking the third UWM nonconference contest to appear on the ESPN family of networks in 2014-15.
Milwaukee returns three starters from last year’s squad that went 21-14 and reached the NCAA Tournament. Jeter welcomes back three of his top five scorers from last season, including junior forwards Matt Tiby (12.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and Austin Arians (11.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg).
