MILWAUKEE — As a result of the successful turnout at last year’s championship bout, the Brewcity Bruisers will play all five home games of the 2011 season at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The move comes after four home seasons played at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex in Franklin, and provides a more central location and better amenities for larger crowds.
The 2010 home season experienced a significant amount of growth, as several hundred people bought standing-room only tickets for each bout, and others had to be turned away at the door. The increase in demand encouraged the Brewcity Bruisers to secure a date at the U.S. Cellular Arena for their fifth and final championship bout of the 2010 season. It was a huge success; the U.S. Cellular Arena provides enough seating to meet the growing demand for women’s roller derby in Milwaukee.
Fidela Castrate, member of the league’s board of directors said, “We wanted to ensure that we could continue growing and give our fan base what they want and at the same time bring in new fans. This season it will be much easier for fans to get tickets and have seats with a good view and no one will be turned away at the door. This has been a long term goal that the league has set and now is achieving. We also have an opportunity to break the modern-day roller derby attendance record of 6,000 plus, which currently belongs to Seattle's league Rat City.”
The 2011 bouts are scheduled for Saturday, January 8, Sunday, February 20, Saturday, March 19, Saturday, April 16 and Saturday, May 14. April 16 and May 14 are the semi-finals and championship bouts, respectively.
All bouts start at 7 p.m. except for Sun. Feb. 20, which starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
ABOUT ROLLER DERBY AND THE BREWCITY BRUISERS
Roller derby is all-female, flat-track and skater-operated. Members skate under aliases, and entertain fans with their personalities, fishnets, makeup and unique uniforms.
Established Oct. 19, 2005, the Brewcity Bruisers are a skater-owned and operated flat track league made up of four teams: the Rushin’ Rollettes, the Shevil Knevils, Maiden Milwaukee and the Crazy 8’s. Members of these four teams come together to form the Brewcity Bruisers' All-Stars and the Brewcity Bruisers' Battlestars. These two teams represent the league on a regional and national level. The league is proudly reviving the American tradition of roller derby by bringing the sport to a new generation of Milwaukee fans and offering a unique blend of athletic competition and entertainment. The Brewcity Bruisers are members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
The Brewcity Bruisers represent women from a variety of backgrounds, attitudes and skill levels. It is the league’s goal to promote women’s strength and self-esteem and to create a sense of camaraderie and friendship that will extend into the community through support of local businesses, arts and charities.
